Listen to RTHK's News Digest podcast (in Cantonese) for Chinese headlines and editorial in major Chinese language newspapers.

The bottom-line: Hu is not committing to any timetable or roadmap for Hong Kong to move towards universal suffrage at this time.

Chris Yeung, South China Morning Post's editor-at-large wrote on Wednesday, November 16th, two days before Hong Kong Chief Executive Donald Tsang met Chinese President Hu Jintao during Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation summit.

"Even though they [the people of Hong Kong] are convinced they deserve to elect their leader in 2007, many feel helpless to do anything but simply accept Beijing's decision.

But they also feel strongly that it is time to put an end to the protracted row over political reform, with a clearer, stronger policy statement from the central and Hong Kong governments on the goal of universal suffrage. Underlying the impatience is a degree of mistrust of the two governments."
