Seeing Li Ao's Name Again

Looks like everyone in the Chinese speaking world is talking about Li Ao (李敖) these days, as the Taiwan-based prolific and outspoken historian turned politican gave public speeches in Beijing over the past few days.

Reuters: "Prolific and controversial Taiwan author Li Ao riled China on Wednesday by giving millions of Internet surfers and television viewers a taste of the self-ruled island's freewheeling democracy.

Li championed freedom of speech and took repeated swipes at the Communist Party in a no-holds-barred question-and-answer session at Peking University televised live by Hong Kong's Phoenix cable network which is seen by millions across China."

But SCMP noted that Li Ao had bowed to pressure after his first speech. [via Daai Tou Laam Diaries]

"[h]e was under great pressure from mainland authorities after the speech at Peking University," Ms Lee said. "He was well prepared for this speech, but still came across censorship. He was not happy and said he may lose his talk show programme [which can be viewed on the mainland]."

Coming across to his name again and reading the speech he gave at Beijing University brought back a lot of happy memories. He is still very witty and sarcastic. But I no longer crazy about reading his works anymore. It just a matter of changed taste and reading needs.
